<h2 style="text-align: justify;"><span style="text-align: justify;">Northern Lights</span></h2>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="text-align: justify;">Quite often when you are heading to northern lattitudes, places like Norway, Canada or Iceland you will come across a lot of pictures of <strong>Aurora Borealis</strong>.  You will see postcards with night skies filled up with amazing green lights. </span></p>
<blockquote>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="text-align: justify;">But what is it? And what does it really look like to naked eye? </span></p>
</blockquote>
<p style="text-align: justify;">To keep it simple I will just say that this phenomenon is caused by<strong> particles blown away from the sun</strong>, which we call <strong>solar wind</strong>. When it reaches the Earth&#8217;s magnetic field it can set the sky ablaze! However it does not happen every night. Even if you go as far north as Tromsø in Norway 70°N.</p>
<div data-sliderid="21930" id="penci-post-gallery__21930" class="penci-post-gallery-container justified column-3" data-height="150" data-margin="3"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-gallery-justified" href="https://i0.wp.com/familytripz.pl/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/6.jpg?fit=1322%2C900&ssl=1" data-cap="Green Northern Lights seen in Iceland"><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/familytripz.pl/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/6.jpg?fit=585%2C398&ssl=1" alt="Green Northern Lights seen in Iceland" title="Green Northern Lights seen in Iceland"><div class="caption">Green Northern Lights seen in Iceland</div></a><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-gallery-justified" href="https://i0.wp.com/familytripz.pl/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/2.jpg?fit=1322%2C900&ssl=1" data-cap="Aurora Borealis seen on plane"><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/familytripz.pl/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/2.jpg?fit=585%2C398&ssl=1" alt="Aurora Borealis seen on plane" title="Aurora Borealis seen on plane"><div class="caption">Aurora Borealis seen on plane</div></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<h3>Lady Aurora &#8211; will &#8220;she&#8221; be visable?</h3>
<p>There are quite a few factors that can determin if you will be able to see the show.</p>
<p>We can divide them into 2 groups: <strong>sun raleted</strong> and <strong>Earth related.</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>The brightness and speed of Aurora moving throughout the sky depends on speed, dencity and velocity of solar wind. Earths magnetic field can have northern and southern spin, when it doesn not match it will push solar wind away from the atmosphere.</p></blockquote>
<p>The last one is probaly the most annoying one. Even if the rest of the factors point to astral firework show your view can be obstructed by clouds.</p>
</div>
<div data-sliderid="18227" id="penci-post-gallery__18227" class="penci-post-gallery-container justified column-3" data-height="150" data-margin="3"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-gallery-justified" href="https://i0.wp.com/familytripz.pl/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/7.jpg?fit=1322%2C900&ssl=1" data-cap="Aurora Borealis in Oslo"><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/familytripz.pl/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/7.jpg?fit=585%2C398&ssl=1" alt="Aurora Borealis in Oslo" title="Aurora Borealis in Oslo"><div class="caption">Aurora Borealis in Oslo</div></a><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-gallery-justified" href="https://i0.wp.com/familytripz.pl/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/9.jpg?fit=1322%2C900&ssl=1" data-cap="Aurora Borealis in Oslo"><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/familytripz.pl/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/9.jpg?fit=585%2C398&ssl=1" alt="Aurora Borealis in Oslo" title="Aurora Borealis in Oslo"><div class="caption">Aurora Borealis in Oslo</div></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>
<h3 style="clear: both; text-align: left;">When does it happen?</h3>
<p>Does it happen only in winter, or only in the night? Hell no,<strong> it happens all year round</strong>, but we can observe it only in winter because we need the night to be dark. In summer beyond the arctic circle the sun does not go down at all.</p>
<blockquote><p>This is why Aurora Hunters venture into cold winter darkness.</p></blockquote>
<p>So now that you now how many different criteria need to be fulfilled you know it is not that easy, even if you are in the right place. Speaking of which, if the sun is very active and the solar wind is really strong you can see The Lights as far south as The Yellowstone NP 44°N. This is quite a rare event, for example in winter 2014/15 it happened just few times. Aurora can be just a faint green light or a pale rainbow moving through the sky, or sometimes it can dance all around the sky. The color of the lights depends on which element of the Astmosphere was affected by the solar wind. Neons works the same way. Different gases shine in different colors.</p>
</div>
<div data-sliderid="72155" id="penci-post-gallery__72155" class="penci-post-gallery-container justified column-3" data-height="150" data-margin="3"><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-gallery-justified" href="https://i0.wp.com/familytripz.pl/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/1.jpg?fit=1322%2C900&ssl=1" data-cap="Aurora Borealis seen in Oslo"><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/familytripz.pl/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/1.jpg?fit=585%2C398&ssl=1" alt="Aurora Borealis seen in Oslo" title="Aurora Borealis seen in Oslo"><div class="caption">Aurora Borealis seen in Oslo</div></a><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-gallery-justified" href="https://i0.wp.com/familytripz.pl/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/4.jpg?fit=1322%2C900&ssl=1" data-cap="Lady Aurora dances above Oslo"><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/familytripz.pl/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/4.jpg?fit=585%2C398&ssl=1" alt="Lady Aurora dances above Oslo" title="Lady Aurora dances above Oslo"><div class="caption">Lady Aurora dances above Oslo</div></a><a class="penci-gallery-ite item-gallery-justified" href="https://i0.wp.com/familytripz.pl/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/3.jpg?fit=1322%2C900&ssl=1" data-cap="Sognsvann Lake, Oslo"><img decoding="async" src="https://i0.wp.com/familytripz.pl/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/3.jpg?fit=585%2C398&ssl=1" alt="Sognsvann Lake, Oslo" title="OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA"><div class="caption">Sognsvann Lake, Oslo</div></a></div>
<h4></h4>
<blockquote>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Aurora Australis which illuminates the southern sky tends to be more pink, while Northern Lights are mostly green. Don&#8217;t take it as a rule tho!</span></h4>
</blockquote>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">Aurora-service and a KP index</h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">If you want to find out which night is the night I would suggest observing <a href="http://www.aurora-service.eu/aurora-forecast/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">this webside</a>. Aurora-service provides you with viral info about current conditions. However we still do not know how to predict sun&#8217;s activity in the future so you can only catch a glimps for 3 days ahead. <strong>You can see  there current kp index</strong>. The higher it is, the stonger the solar wind, therefore you can see brighter lights and they can be observed further south.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">Check the weather conditions first!</h4>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Before you leave your cosy, warm apartment and venture to cold, winter night don&#8217;t forget to check the cloud coverage in the region. When you are in tourist destinations there will most likely be companies providing some sort of &#8220;Aurora Experience&#8221;. Prices may vary due to locations and group sizes but they are usually quite high. You can rely on the experience of your guide or try your own luck. It is entirely up to you. Good luck hunthing the Lights!</p>

<h3 style="text-align: justify;">Ice Cave &#8211; &#8220;a must&#8221; while exploring Iceland in winter!</h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;">If you happen to chose to travel to <strong>Iceland</strong> in winter time visiting <strong>Ice Cave</strong> is an absolute must.</p>
<blockquote>
<div style="text-align: justify;">Just imagine beeing surrounded by walls of deep blue, thousands years old Ice. It is like a trip to a whole new world. It is the one ruled by Elsa from Frozen, or Snow Queen or Ice Giants of Jotunheim &#8211; your pick.<br />
<a name="more"></a></div>
</blockquote>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<h4>Vatnajökull National Park</h4>
<p>First things first, in order to visit such a magnificent place, you will have to travel around 350 km east from Reykjavik to <strong>Vatnajökull National Park</strong> which protects (same named) largest glacier in Europe. Renting a car is highly recommended althoug driving conditions can be <span style="font-size: 12pt;"><em>quite challenging</em></span>. The other thing is tht you will need a guide in order to safely pay a visit in Ice Castle. We chose <a href="http://www.localguideofvatnajokull.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Local Guide of Vatnajökul</strong>l</a>. We were really satisfied with our choice.</p>
<h4>Unique experience, every single year!</h4>
<p>The meeting point looks abandoned at the first glimpse but later on it turns out to be very cosy and welcoming facility. Our guide was living in this neigbourhood his entire life, just like his father and grandfather before. He had a genuine passion for mountains and had a lot of experience with the  Ice Caves. The thing is they are created during the summer when glacier retreats and the water resulting from melting carves tunnels and halls through Ice. So each year new Ice Caves are created and old ones are destroyed. <strong>So each year it is a different, unique experience</strong>. In autumn months guides task is to locate and asses newly created caves.</p>

<h2>Inside the Ice Cave</h2>
<p style="text-align: justify;">We continued our journey in a group of 8 in <span style="font-size: 12pt;"><em>4-wheel drive monster</em></span>. Path leaded throught frozen deserted arctic tundra to the tip of a <strong>Vatnajökull Glacier</strong>. After a short walk we entered the cave.</p>
<blockquote>
<div style="text-align: justify;">It was suprisingly warm and quiet after experiencing the wind roarming outside felt almost like a sanctuary.</div>
</blockquote>
<div style="text-align: justify;">Due to compression and great strenght of a glacial movements Ice in a glacier is deep blue colour. Our pictures do not lie. This is how it looks. Maybe slightly better in a matter of fact.</div>
<div></div>
<h4>30 minutes in a deep blue paradise!</h4>
<div></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">We had the cave for ourselfs for 30 minutes. It was quite big with couple of big halls and multiple tunnels so with just 8 people in there we had a lot of privacy. <strong>Photography opportunities are just incredible</strong>, views are stunning, it was definietly the greatest 30 min on Iceland.</div>
<div></div>

</div>
<p><span style="text-align: justify;">After that we were droped off in the same location and we continued east to famous glacier lagoon &#8211; Jökulsárlón.</span></p>
<h4>Regular trip vs Photography trip</h4>
<div style="text-align: justify;">Local Guides were also offering a &#8220;photography trip&#8221; to Ice Cave. In that year, both trips were visiting the same cave but had some more time, inside. We were perfeclty satisfied with our 30 minutes. In some seasons, they will take you to some more distant ones. Be sure to book in advance as they sell out quickly.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;"></div>
<h5 style="text-align: justify;">Do not forget to check out our short movie from this adventure.</h5>
<p><strong>See you in the Ice Halls!</strong></p>
